Lady Stangs back on top!!

The Lady Stangs volleyball team followed up an impressive performance on Saturday, sweeping West Division leading Adams State, with another sweep last night against intrastate rival NM Highlands to pull into a 3 way tie atop the West Division in the RMAC. WNMU is tied with Adams and CSU Pueblo.

The Lady Stangs might have gotten the sweep but it wasn’t necessarily easy, it never is against the Cowgirls, as they games were 21/21/19. The Cowgirls got up early in the first set but Angelina Pulu got a kill and Alyssa Melhack followed with a service ace to spark the Stangs’ run back into the lead. It remained close until Ziona Verhulsdonk closed out the first set with 3 kills in 4 points.

In set 2 with the teams tied at 10, it was Jordan Johnston’s turn to gain the momentum for the home team as she got a solo block followed by a Pulu kill and a Johnston kill to put the Stangs up and they would not trail again; taking 4 of the last 5 points to close out the set and go up 2-0.

Highlands tried to put the jinx on WNMU, who seems to win the first 2 sets then lose the next 3 all too often. But after falling behind 4-1 the Stangs fought back and tied the score at 8 on a kill by Heather Rux and then took the lead on a Verhulsdonk kill at 12-11. Johnston and Pulu closed out the set with kills and put another win in the Stang column.

Coach Callender’s team can make it exciting and it’s definitely worth your time to go watch a game; which could be tonight as the Lady Stangs host non-conference foe Grand Canyon tonight at 5 p.m.
