Coach Beatty continued to work his motivational magic before round 3 in Las Cruces as the Mustangs faced one of the toughest fields of the season at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate golf tournament; the Stangs were the only DII team in the 14 team field. The Mustangs finished in 11th beating Nebraska, Weber State and Rice; only 1 stroke behind Northern Colorado and 4 strokes behind UTEP. UNLV won the tourney with an 818 score; the Stangs finished at 882.

Patrick Beyhan fired his best round of the tournament, as did 3 of the 5 Mustangs, in the final round, an even par 71 to move up to 30th place individually. Patrick was 5 over par at 218; first place was 14 under par. Evan Littlefied tied the low round for the Stangs with a one under 70; David Metz was also even par yesterday after a one under round during 2nd round play; he and Evan shot 220 which tied them for 38th. Michael Lopez was consistent with a 75, 226 for a 59th place finish and Michael O’Connor just couldn’t get it going also shooting 75, his best round of the tourney, for a 230 and 74th place finish.

That’s a pretty strong outing for the Mustangs going against some of the top players in collegiate golf. No doubt the Stangs could have and should have finished in the top 10; which one of the guys can’t say they missed a put or two; and I’m sure they’d like to have a better first round. But now they’ll make a push towards the spring as they hone their games over the break; the Stangs get back to play on 2/4/12 in TorC at the New Mexico Collegiate Cup, hosted by WNMU.
