WNMU men’s golf completed day one of the annual Cactus Thaw tournament in Silver City sitting in 2nd and 3rd place. WNMU fielded two teams for the 8 team event played at Silver Fairways and got solid outings from everyone. South Mountain CC sits in first place with a cumulative -1 score while WNMU (A) is at +3 and WNMU (B) is in third at +12. Grand Canyon +16, Mesa CC +21, Chandler -Gilbert CC +29, NMMI +35 and UTEP +39 round out the field.

Jimmy Kozikowski, South Mountain, leads in the individual standings at -5 firing a 66 on the modified par 71 Silver Fairways course. Mustangs Mike Lopez and Patrick Beyhan are right behind at -3 and -2 respectively with Mike O’Connor in 5th place after recording a -1 70 in round one play. All three are competing on the WNMU (A) squad. South Mountain’s Ian Patterson is tied for 3rd with Beyhan at -2 to round out the top five individual scorers. The course may be short but the best players have a tough time reading the greens and understanding the intricacies of course management; putting your shot in the right place to go for the pin. The day saw a lot of good players record double and even triple bogies on their scorecards as many players tried to over power the course.

Other Mustangs competing in the tournament, which concludes with morning play today, are Kenny Maroney WNMU (A) 73; Ben Nelson (A) 75; David Metz (A) 76; Oscar Sachs WNMU (B) 74; Ryan Pitzel (B) 76; Anders Friman (B) 28; and Ted Flores (B) 86.

The WNMU women were scheduled to compete as well but the opposing women’s teams all canceled at the last minute.
