WNMU women’s tennis team took the court for their second match of the season traveling to Grand Canyon University for a 3 day tournament. The Lady Stangs (0-1) opened tournament play on Wednesday against former Pac West Conference foe University of Hawaii Hilo. Fans saw some very exciting opening round singles play that saw both teams prevail in 3 of the 6 matches. Anna Tiurina got the first win of the day at the #1 spot defeating Melanie Viriyapunt 7-6, 6-4. Nikolina Vukadin, playing #2, followed with another Mustang victory as she dropped the first set 5-7 to Emelie Laussen before prevailing 6-1 and 10-4 in the tie breaker. Ashley Newell at #3 got an easy first set win 6-2 and closed out her match 7-6 in the second set. Then things turned for WNMU. At #4, Doris Berberic struggled losing 0-6, 6-1 to Anna Hamlin. Dena Irvin played strong for the Lady Stangs but fell 3-6, 3-6 to Morrisa Kahakui. Davida Aragon took Chelsea Sato to a tiebreaker after losing the first set 1-6, winning the second 7-6 and dropping the tie breaker 10-3.

That put all the pressure on the doubles matches for WNMU. The points were close but Hawaii Hilo was able to get a doubles sweep to gain the team win. Vukadin/Tiurina dropped their match 4-8; Newell and Berberic also fell by a 4-8 margin. Irvin and Aragon dropped their set 3-8.

WNMU didn’t have much time to rest as they had to take the court against #2 BYU Hawaii. WNMU couldn’t keep up with the powerful Seasiders dropping the match 9-0. Anna had the best showing for the Lady Stangs as the true freshman took on the top ranked player in NCAA DII tennis dropping her matches 3-6, 3-6. Nikolina faced the #4 player in the nation falling 6-4, 6-0. Berberic would fall 6-1, 6-0; Irvin 6-0, 6-0 and Aragon 6-1, 6-0.
