It was beautiful weather for the annual Cactus Thaw Collegiate Invitational in Silver City and WNMU took advantage of not only the good weather but also local course knowledge to finish 2nd and 3rd in the 8 team event. Coach Kent Beatty has a deep and talented but young squad this year and fielded two teams in order to get more players experience as the Mustangs shoot for a return trip to the NCAA regionals. The team finished 9th out of 23 teams last season and would like to improve on that finish.

They are certainly off to a solid start as the Mustang ‘A’ team finished second behind defending National Champion and current #1 ranked South Mountain CC in the two day event. SMCC fired an even par 568 to take top team honors. Jimmy Kozikowski of SMCC finished first individually with a 6 under par 136. Teammate Ian Patterson was one stroke behind at 137.

Then came a host of Mustangs. Patrick Beyhan opened with a 69 but struggled with inconsistent putting on day two carding a 71. Michael Lopez, playing on the Mustang ‘B’ squad carded rounds of 68-74 to take fourth place. Michael O’Connor posted scores of 70-74 to stand alone in fifth while Kenny Maroney was consistent with scores of 73-72 and ended tied for 6th place. Ben Nelson was the last Mustang in the top 10 with rounds of 75-73.

Other results for WNMU: Oscar Sachs 74-75 (12th); David Metz 76-73 (12th); Anders Friman 78-74 (17th); Ryan Pitzel 76-78 (18th); Ted Flores 86-83 (39th). While South Mountain took top team honors, WNMU’s teams finished in second and third. Rounding out the team standings: Mesa CC, Grand Canyon University, Chandler-Gilbert CC, NMMI, UTEP.
