Mustangs get win
T. J. Riley started every game for WNMU in his three year career. While the season has not gone the way the Mustangs envisioned, Riley was certain of one thing; he and the Mustangs were going to win at home on Senior Night. Chad Carter got the first 3 points of the night and T. J. hit a layup to open up a Mustang 5-0 lead right out of the gate and the Mustangs would never trail on their way to a 74-58 victory over Regis University.
It wasn’t as easy as it might sound as Lonnie Porter’s Regis Rangers would not go away and continued to stay within striking distance of the Mustangs. Breen Weeks and Dionte Goodlette would each get a couple of buckets to pull Regis back within 2 points. WNMU got a 3 point shot from Ryan Crane to build the Mustang lead to 5 and that was the way it would go the rest of the night. WNMU would build the lead to as high as 11 points over the next few minutes as Carter spurred the Mustang offense to a 23-12 lead midway through the first half. But Regis forced a couple of turnovers, hit a couple of easy buckets and went on a 10-2 run to pull close. WNMU would end the half on a surge and enjoy an 8 point half time lead.
Out of the break, the teams would continue their back and forth dance as Riley took control driving to the bucket several times including two highlight reel dunks. But just as WNMU would build the lead to 7 or 8, Regis would answer with a small run of their own. The Rangers were able to pull within 3 points with just under 10 minutes to go in the game. Juan Saurez and Chris Mason sparked a run with a pair of lay ups off of Regis turnovers. Darryl Littleton would add a bucket as would Riley followed by a Suarez three point shot and the Mustangs would build the lead to 17 and never look back.
Riley and Carter ended the evening with 19 points a piece to lead the victorious Mustangs. Carter also had a team high 7 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. Riley added 5 assists and 2 steals. Juan Saurez led the Stangs with 6 assists while posting 7 points. Lucio Luttrell also had 7 points and Ryan Crane added 8. Regis was paced by Demetrius Goodlette with 16 points. WNMU will close out their season at New Mexico Highlands University next Saturday.
