Not again!

First let me say that getting a split on the road for the Lady Stangs volleyball squad is not a bad outcome given their struggles last year but oh what could have been and what still may be. The Lady Stangs got the win in Gunnison and then headed to Pueblo to take on co-leader CSUP on Saturday afternoon. Western took control with a 2-1 lead before dropping the last two games to the Thunderwolves and losing the match 3-2. It was a back and forth affair all day long with the home team getting off to a fast start before WNMU came back to take the lead in the first set. But then Pueblo ran off 4 straight to get the win.

In the 2nd set the Lady Stangs dominated thanks to outstanding play from Heather Rux and Jordan Johnston with solid help from Taylor Henderson. Then in the 3rd set it was tight all the way through until WNMU, tied with CSUP at 20, was able to turn two Thunderwolve errors into points and Angelina Pulu got a kill and a service ace to ice the set for the visitors. In the 4th set the Stangs dug a hole but didn’t give up and pulled to within one at 21-20 behind more solid play from Rux before Pueblo ran off 3 straight points. The purple and gold wouldn’t go away and Destiny Melbane posted a kill followed by Rux and the Lady Stangs were back within one but Pueblo called a TO and was able to get the final point to even the match at 2.

In the final set the home team started fast getting the first five points; while the Stangs forced a couple of errors and got a service ace from Marille Frost, they just couldn’t overcome the fast start. The Lady Stangs keep coming close but just haven’t learned how to win consistently on the road and take advantage of solid early match play to close out the home teams. They are getting better and it’s a longer than desired process but they are getting there…
