Lady Stangs dominate again

October 2nd, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

The Lady Stangs returned home for a two game stint against RMAC foes Ft. Lewis and UC Colorado Springs. As usual the home team was very protective of Drag’s Court and spiked the opposition. After Adams State’s win over Pueblo earlier in the week, WNMU, Adams and Pueblo are all tied atop the West Division of the RMAC at 5-2.

Angelina Pulu continued to play very well getting the Lady Stangs off to a strong start in the first set with 5 straight kills to build a 12-7 lead. Jordan Johnston, Taylor Henderson and Ziona Verhulsdonk all tallied kills to build a huge lead while Marilee Frost got a service ace and the purple and gold rolled to an easy first set victory. Usually if the Lady Stangs are going to make it a close match, they will win the first two sets, lose the second two and then let it be decided in a close fifth set. Not against the Skyhawks; Ft. Lewis was able to build an early lead but FLC errors and some opportune play by Malayzha Dinkins tallied a kill to cut the deficit to one and the Stangs build a solid lead but couldn’t put the Skyhawks away and after going back and forth the Lady Stangs were edged 25-23. But in the 3rd set the Stangs right the ship racing out of the gate to an 11-4 lead with stellar play from Heather Rux, Johnston, Pulu; but it wasn’t going to be easy; Verhulsdonk pounded home a kill to build a 19-12 lead before the Stangs made a couple of errors and allowed Ft. Lewis to crawl back into it at 23-21. Rux would seal the win with a kill on an assist from Alyssa Melhack. Tied at 13 in the 4th set, Pulu took control with 2 kills and Verhulsdonk and Johnson each added to the tally and the Stangs held off the visitors to get a 3-1 win.

On Saturday, the Lady Stangs continued Western’s dominance over Colorado Mesa University for the day as they followed the football team’s win with a sweep of the Mavericks. It wasn’t real easy but as the Lady Stangs built leads only to let the visiting team back into the game before shutting them out. The Stangs fell behind in the first game at 22-19 before Melhack and Rux got a couple of big blocks to spark the comeback. One thing about it, the ladies will make it exciting but they continue to fight back and win the matches they should win. Way to go ladies!!
